PROJECTS costing £100,000 are set to brighten up The Haulgh and boost security within weeks.

A block of 18 houses in Bromwich Street will have an £80,000 facelift and street lights will be installed in other areas.

It is hoped the initiative will help to transform the image of the Haulgh. The Bradford Street end of the neighbourhood has been plagued with problems caused by drugs, crime and prostitution. The projects are funded by Government and Bolton Council cash.

Project manager Colin Hughes said the improvements will have a big impact for local residents.

He said: "We are hoping for a start on site within the next two weeks as everybody has supported the scheme.

"Funding is now being sought for the lighting scheme and it is hoped we might be able to start work in early March."

Around 14 Victorian houses in the block, numbers 10 to 44, are owned by private landlords. The rest are owner-occupied.

Landlords are currently in talks with Bolton Council as to when the scheme can begin.

Mr Hughes added: "Tenders have been returned within budget estimates and work is now progressing to appoint the successful contractor and to sign up landlords."

The plans, part of the East Bolton Regeneration Scheme, will see lights installed in back streets behind Hilden Street, Bradford Street and Crawford Street after residents voiced their concerns. Community groups are also working with police, residents and Bolton Council in a bid to enhance The Haulgh's reputation with a series of other projects.
