BLACKROD Town proved beyond doubt that the previous weekend's 4-2 win over Norcross and Warbreck was no flash in the pan.

That result ended a recent spell in the doldrums and a superb follow-up performance on Saturday earned a 0-0 draw at Premier Division table-toppers Kirkham and Wesham.

The hosts, current clear leaders in the title race and Lancs FA Amateur Shield semi finalists, two titles they are defending, were restricted by Arthur Flatters's side to just one decent chance in the whole ninety minutes.

Keeper Martin Gibbs matched up to the high standard of play set by his teammates with breathtaking full length save to fingertip a powerdrive over the crossbar.

In contrast Town created a number of opportunities with Chris Lee's stunning effort hitting the bar, Andy Morris twice bringing quality saves out of the home keeper and 18 year old striker Tony Horbury causing the Kirkham defence problems all afternoon with his power and pace and twice breaking through to go close. The man of the match award went to midfielder Graham Neald.

Team boss Flatters was pleased with his side and especially the way his new young striker has repaid his faith in giving him his 1st team chance.

"He is going to be a special player you can see that," he says. "He had trials with the Wanderers for six weeks at the start of the season and they have said they want to have another look at him. He's a big, strong lad with the bonus of plenty pace and he's a handful for any defence. We did very well and gave Kirkham a real scare. There's no doubt we should have on it."

Stoneclough will play Lytham St Annes in the quarter final of the West Lancs Tavern Cup this coming Saturday after last weekend's superb 3-1 Round One triumph over Tottington United. The thrice postponed tie was switched from Tottington to Stoneclough's Brook street ground to ensure it went ahead.

Despite having not seen competitive action since December 15 Peter Morris' lads were quickly out of the blocks with Johnny Openshaw beating two Tottington players and slotting home the first goal in the opening minute. The manager's brother, Dave, got the second on 20 minutes with a superb chip over the keeper.

The visitors hit back just before the interval but Morris effectively settled the tie on the hour mark rising to head home Paul Mellor's inviting cross. Dougie Heenan missed out on the opportunity to add to Stoneclough's tally when his penalty kick was superbly saved. Two goal Morris won the star performer vote.
