Wanderers warmed up for the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Everton with a 4-0 thrashing of Notts County at Burden.

It was only in the 61st minute that they took the lead through a Pedro Richards own goal but after that the floodgates opened.

Paul Jones added a second goal in the 70th minute, shooting through a crowded penalty area before Willie Morgan and Neil Whatmore emphasised the win with two more goals.

THERE was disappointment all round as Wanderers were held to a goalless draw by Chester City at Burnden Park.

New signing Andy Walker found that goals were going to be hard to come by as Harry McNally's seemingly perennial strugglers put a spoke in Wanderers' promotion hopes.

"I was disaapointed they put so many men behind the ball," said Walker. "It was obvious they had only come for a goalless draw."

The result made it a miserable return of four points from four games prompting manager Phil Neal to say: "It's about time we got a few wins under our belts.

"It's certainly nothing like promotion form."

WANDERERS boss Colin Todd was closing in on Aberdeen striker Andy Booth, who looked to be heading to Burnden in a deal worth around £500,000.

The player had been valued at £2million 18 months ago but a series of injuries had held up his progress.

Nevertheless, Todd and Phil Brown saw Booth hit a sensational goal against Hibernian and quickly agreed on a price with Aberdeen.

All that was needed was for the player to agree terms but untimately the deal was destined to come to nothing.

Two days earlier, Wanderers paid for defensive errors when beaten 3-2 by Reading at Elm Park.

"Good sides keep clean sheets," said Colin Todd after the game in which Alan Thompson and John McGinley scored for Wanderers.
