GOVERNMENT plans to make £40 million available for business training pilots have been welcomed by Greater Manchester's Learning and Skills Council.

Chancellor Gordon Brown said in his pre-Budget report that a boost to the schools' capital modernisation fund is to be announced and stated that VAT rules were to be simplified to help small businessesses, saving up to £1,000 a year from an extended flat rate. Mr Anthony Goldstone, chairman of the Learning and Skills Council Greater Manchester, said: "These incentives may go some way towards helping businesses, especially small and medium-sized businesses, to raise the skill levels of their employees.

"The Learning and Skills Councils work in partnership with Business Link, Chamber of Commerce and other employer organisations to raise skill levels to increase the competitiveness of businesses and the local economy."
