GUDNI Bergsson's nomination as the Bolton Evening News Player of the Month for November will come as no surprise to Wanderers' fans who have marvelled at the Reebok captain's performances.

At 36, he could have spent the last two years back home in Iceland practising law if he hadn't decided to stay "for just one more season" - twice. But the law can wait.

In his current form, the super-fit veteran defender is nowhere near ready for hanging up his boots.

Like quality wine, his performances have matured with every passing year. Those who have followed his career have no hesitation in acknowledging that he has never played better.

His performances at Ipswich, where he scored his first goal of the season, and at home to Fulham, when his class and composure cancelled out the threat of Louis Saha and Barry Hayles, were awe-inspiring exhibitions of quality central defending.

With Michael Ricketts banging in the goals, Jussi Jaaskelainen enhancing his reputation with every game and Paul Warhurst looking every inch the thoroughbred he is, competition for the BEN accolade - voted for by our readers and visitors to the thisisbolton.co.uk website - was potentially fierce.

But Bergsson won the race by a distance.
