BOLTON Mets ARLFC resumed their season on Saturday against Rochdale Mayfield on their new pitch at Springfield Road, Kearsley.

The Mets started the stronger of the two sides, and were soon on the scoresheet with hooker Robert Bailey completing a well-educated set play.

Second rowers Dave Cain and Peter Horrocks both penetrating into the opposition half, paved the way for prop Steven Dorning to charge over from acting-half to give Bolton a 10-0 lead.

Rochdale replied with two quick tries, and as the first half came to a close converted a drop-kick to give them an 11-10 lead at the break.

Into the second half and Bolton regained the lead with a try from centre Gaz Cartwirght collecting a short ball and hitting the gap with pace. But Mayfield soon retrieved the lead after the Mets conceded a penalty in their own half.

Not to be outdone, Bolton came up with another try, stand-off Mark Dorning rounding three defenders before going over. Minutes later full back Andy Bowling collected the ball 20m out, sprinted through giving the Mets a 24-17 lead.

With the clock counting down, Mayfield scored again to bring them within one point of the lead. Then on the final play of the game, Rochdale were awarded a dubious penalty under Bolton's sticks, which they converted as the referee blew for time, giving them a 25-24 victory.

Bolton's Chairman remarked after the game: "With the coach resigning last week, and all the pitch trouble we have had this season, the future wasn't looking too bright, but Saturday's team performance was first class. The lads were unlucky not to win, if we put this amount of effort in every week the results will soon start coming our way."

Next week at home to Crossfields, playing at South Avenue off Springfield Road, Kearsley.
