Youngster is

recognised for

outstanding

dedication to

disabled mum By Phil Green philip.green@lancashire.newsquest.co.uk MUM is most definitely the word for selfless schoolboy Calum Bond who has been recognised in Royal fashion for his kind acts.

Family-minded youngster Calum, aged 13, has joined a select band of children across the country to earn a Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award.

The award recognises children who have made an outstanding contribution to their community.

And Harper Green High School pupil Calum has been recognised for his dedication in caring for his wheelchair-bound mum, Andrea.

When Calum was just three years old, his mother suffered a deep vein thrombosis. Her leg swelled up so badly that she spent many weeks in the Royal Bolton Hospital.

The aftermath of the illness has meant that Mrs Bond, aged 38, has not walked since.

But almost straight away Calum stepped in to help the whole family. He still gives up much of his spare time to help his dad, Andrew, aged 39, with the housework and shopping.

As well as this, he is there to look out for sister Sheridan, aged 10, who also helps with their chores.

Committed Calum is always on hand to get his mum in and out of her wheelchair and to keep her spirits up.

"He has a wicked sense of humour, just like his dad," said Mrs Bond. "He has always been there for me. He is a wonderful son.

"The whole family are very proud of Calum. He is a very caring boy and deserves this recognition."

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award was launched last year. It is given to pupils nominated by their schools for improving the lives of others, enhancing the school or community, or showing exemplary progress in personal development.

Around 1,500 children have received the honour so far.

And, while modest Calum was pleased to get the award, he was typically more concerned about his mum. He said: "I always make sure she can have a laugh.

"Even though she is in a wheelchair we make sure she enjoys herself."

Calum was presented with the award at Harper Green's recent Presentation Evening.

Assistant headteacher Viv Sharples said: "We at Harper Green are very proud of Calum. He is a great example to others and we are glad this he has been recognised in such a prestigious way."
