I would like to point out to B Howarth (BEN letters: November 13) why "The good ole Brits" entered the First World War.

Contrary to Mr Howarth's opinion, we did not enter that war because Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. It was because the Schlieffen war plan meant that Germany would have to invade Belgium to enter France. We had previously signed a treaty with Belgium promising to protect them on invasion, and we fulfilled that promise.

And may I also point out, why we entered this present war in Afghanistan?

Remember September 11? Up to 100 Britons were killed in the Twin Towers in New York, as were people of other nationalities, not just Americans. Should we just stand back and forget about those Britons?
