Wanderers booked themselves a nice little earner when they agreed to switch the Worthington Cup clash with Nottingham Forest to Monday night.

The third round tie, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was brought forward 24 hours for live screening on ITV Sport Digital banking Wanderers a cool £100,000.

Sam Allardyce, who sanctioned the switch knowing he might be without a handful of international players, admitted: "We took the money! That's the bottom line!"

The switch is expected to put internationals Jussi Jaaskelainen, Jermaine Johnson and Akinori Nishizawa out of the reckoning. Ricardo Gardner, who was on World Cup duty with Johnson for Jamaica in the United States yesterday, was already suspended.

But the manager was planning to ring the changes anyway and reckons: "A Worthington Cup third round tie on a Tuesday wouldn't have been very fruitful in terms of a gate so the opportunity to play live on ITV and the revenue was something we couldn't turn down.

"And I'm in the fortunate position of having a very strong squad to cope with that."
