CHORLEY boss Ken Wright has failed in a bid to land former Accrington and Rossendale hit-man Paul Heavey.

Wright spoke to the player last week about the possibility of joining the Magpies as he looks to beef up his striking resources.

But the well-travelled frontman has decided against a move to Victory Park, opting instead to stay with North West Counties League outfit St Helens.

"Unfortunately, Paul has decided to stay where he is because he's a St Helens lad, he's just been promoted at work, and it's a convenience thing more than anything," said Wright.

The Magpies chief is hopeful, however, of landing another target on loan after holding talks with a Conference club earlier this week, although any deal is unlikely to be done in time for tomorrow's visit of Kendal Town.

"I'm currently negotiating with a Conference club to take a player on loan," said Wright.

"I've got an agreement in principle with his manager so it's now down to the lad and whether or not he wants to join us for a month."

After a stuttering start to the season, Chorley have bounced back to win their last two games.

And Wright was delighted in particular with the performance of new-boy Gareth West on his debut in last week's 2-0 win over Lincoln following his move from Rossendale United.

"Obviously, Gareth is still a bit short of match practice because he hasn't played many games so far this season.

"But once he gets a few games under his belt, you'll start to see the strong player I know he is."

Peter Smyth, Lee Molyneux and Danny Kent are all back in contention for tomorrow's encounter against a Kendal side who chalked up their first win of the season against Radcliffe in midweek.

And Neil Mitchell and Danny Mills should both be okay to continue despite picking up knocks last week.
