A LEIGH rugby hero's collection of medals and memorabilia is to be sold by Sotheby's in London.

Medals, international caps and jerseys worn by former Leigh Rugby League Club captain and England International Harry Woods are expected to fetch around £2,000 when they are auctioned in London on September 21.

The items include some of Mr Woods's 1930s England caps, his 1930s red and white hooped Lancashire County Championship jersey and his black Great Britain 1936 tour shorts.

Current Leigh RL club secretary Tommy Sale, who played briefly with Mr Woods, said he could not say if the club would be bidding for any of the items.

Mr Woods, a second-row forward, was born in Leigh in 1911 and died in Wigan in 1989. He was Leigh's club captain at the outbreak of the Second World War.

He played in six Test matches and three internationals for England between 1935 and 1937 and represented Lancashire at county level five times.

Before playing for Leigh, he played for Wigan Highfield, Liverpool Stanley and Leeds. He played his last professional game for Leigh on May 17, 1947.
