I AM not in the habit of writing to the papers but, after two distressing incidents this week, I would just like to ask someone when the decent people of this town are going to be allowed to go out without being mugged?

On Sunday afternoon, while taking a short walk, I came across an elderly lady sitting on the ground, with a policewoman, waiting for an ambulance. She had just been mugged and is now in hospital with a broken hip.

On Wednesday afternoon, a young boy of 16 was on his bike going to town to buy a gift for his friend's parents.

At the traffic lights at Mayor Street and Spa Road he was ordered to get off his bike by yobs but decided to carry on to Gilnow Road and find another route where he was met by two more yobs who chased him into nearby Heaton Cemetery.

Just as he thought he was getting away, a car skidded in front of him. He was forced off his bike and thumped in the face and had his wallet stolen. Needless to say, the yobs took the £300 bike.

A couple attending a grave kindly took him home. Unfortunately, he did not get their names. So, if you read this, may I, on behalf of his family, thank you very much.

I would just like to add -- this boy does not get any handouts but works hard for his money and has been working most days when he has not had an exam to sit.
