THE seeds in the men's singles competition of the BSF Tennis Championships justified their ranking last night.

Champion and number one seed Nick Hinnighan conceded only one game against Dominic Roscoe of Bradshaw, while Simon Roberts had an identical scoreline against Hawkshaw's Neil Haydock.

The other seeds all progressed, but with a little more difficulty.

Stuart Holloway had a tremendous hard-hitting battle against a new face to the event, Richard Lane from Ellesmere. For a long time it looked as though the match could go either way, until Stuart imposed greater consistency in the second set to win 7-5, 6-2.

Ian Kay had many chances, but repeatedly failed to take them on the vital points. Both he and Jonathan Davies missed the sidelines too often to be impressive, and number two seed Davies was relieved to eventually win 6-3, 6-3.

Ellesmere's Ian Nutter has progressed well in this event over many years. He had the embarrassment of meeting his son Chris in the first round, and last night had to use all his guile and experience to overcome another youngster, Andrew Westmorland 6-3, 6-2.

The ladies doubles saw the first appearance of Holcombe Brook's National League pairing of Sue Lawson and Rachel Anders. They took a little time to settle, but as expected they had no difficulty in overcoming Jackie Cook and Carolyn Ingram from the Lostock base 6-2, 6-0.

Martin Finch and Catherine Wadsworth, also from the Lostock camp, attempted a late comeback against Longsight's Paul Nicholson and Yvonne Lancaster-Hunt, but eventually went down 6-2, 7-5.
