DISABLED people interested in taking to the stage get the chance to play a starring role in a series of new workshops.

Emma Matthews from Farnworth decided to set up a series of drama sessions for would-be actors with physical disabilities.

However, a distinct lack of interest has left her reeling.

Emma, aged 20 received a £6,000 award to stage the drama workshops, which are due to take place in August at Mount St Joseph High School.

She said: "I have had no one contact me to take part in the workshops, despite publicising the sessions. I am offering the service for free. I can not understand it.

"I have a grant and this is a perfect opportunity for disabled people to get involved in theatre.

"There are always complaints that there is not enough access for disabled people to get involved in theatre and here I am offering it on a plate."

The workshops will take place August 20 to 31. Emma is particularly interested in attracting 14 to 17 year olds. She said: "It will not only be fun, but educational.

"After the summer I will be moving to London, where I will be involved in taking over the Drayton Court Theatre in London. This will involve putting on professional productions.

"I will maintain links with the people who attend the workshops, so there could be further opportunities for them."
