I READ with amazement about the huge waiting lists for NHS treatment.

Here in Bermuda, people would be shocked if they had to wait more than a couple of weeks for any elective procedure such as a hip replacement or cataract surgery.

For urgent procedures such as biopsies for possible cancers, they would be fitted in within a couple of days.

The cost? My insurance, which covers me worldwide including airfares and hotel bills if I require overseas treatment, the doctors of my choice, a semi-private room in the hospital, 80per cent of prescription charges and an option to include dental treatment, costs me around $120 per month.

How much does the average individual in the U.K. pay towards National Insurance per month?

It's time the NHS was layed to rest and people received the level of service for which they are in fact paying.

N.b: Indigent patients and pensioners receive the same treatment as above -- payment is made from a government fund.
