THE retiring boss of a Bolton advertising and public relations consultancy has revealed a 20-year-old joke.

David Greenwood, aged 59, is to retire on July 31 and close his business -- Greenwood McAuley Kirkpatrick Ltd. But GMK Advertising, as it is known, has always been a smaller operation than it sounds because Messrs McAuley and Kirkpatrick never existed. David explained: "Ad agencies often have long-winded titles. When it came to forming my own agency I decided to give it a more impressive 'handle,' so I borrowed the surnames of two family members. Bearing in mind the Irish spelling of McAuley, GMK's name became my secret little joke -- an Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman." Mr Greenwood plans to undertake "a limited amount" of freelance consultancy work and devote more time to interests and hobbies which include collectors' cars and antique clocks.
