I PASSED my driving test in 1973 and, since then, somewhere along the line, they have obviously changed the Highway Code without informing me.

I was wondering if you could possibly let me have an up-to-date version? I am, of course, referring to her Newport Street fiasco -- between the junction with Great Moor Street and the Newport Street bridge there are three large red signs with a white stripe indicating road closed except to buses and taxis and then, on reaching the bridge, there are a further two blue signs indicating buses, taxis and cyclists only.

Alas, to no avail, the majority of the town's motorists don't understand the signs, or are in sheer ignorance of them, and find, once they are over the bridge, the Trinity end of Newport Street is now single file, which, in turn, creates huge tailbacks and other congestions in the town centre.

I would like to inform the drivers who choose to ignore these signs that I am a hackney carriage driver who works on the Newport Street taxi rank and that, after loading with passengers, I will not, with the exception of buses, taxis or cyclists, give way to any other vehicles choosing to ignore these road signs.

The warning is clear! Drive along Newport Street illegally at your or your vehicle's peril. I don't think any insurance company would pay out for the repair of a vehicle which has been driven through five clear 'No Entry' or restriction signs.
