A BOLTON woman celebrated her 99th birthday in fine style thanks to her nursing home friends. Widow Beatrice Mills, who lives at Laburnum Lodge, enjoyed being pampered in its private hairdressing salon with fellow residents before starting the celebrations.

A party, complete with a cake, buffet and entertainment, took place in the grounds of the home in Breightmet Fold Lane.

All 34 of the residents joined in the fun, and Beatrice's family, who live in America, sent her cards and a new outfit to mark the occasion.

Care supervisor June Waugh said: "She is a very feisty woman who is doing very well for her age. She is also very popular and very nice."

Former mill worker Beatrice was married to a steeplejack and magician, Fred Mills, and often used to join him on stage in his act. Beatrice's family sent her a letter reminding her of memorable moments from her life. , including meeting her husband at the lakes in Duckinfield, Saddleworth, where she lived before moving to Bolton.
