A FORMER law lord is to chair a House of Lords inquiry into the RAF's worst peacetime accident in which 29 people -- including a Bolton man -- were killed when a Chinook helicopter crashed.

Lord Jauncey of Tullichettle will head a five-strong select committee into the 1994 crash on the Mull of Kintyre.

Major Anthony Hornby was one of those who died when the Chinook Mark Two helicopter, carrying senior anti-terrorism officers from Scotland to Northern Ireland, crashed.

The inquiry, expected to report in January, is likely to investigate a previous conclusion that the pilots had been negligent.
