PUB landlord Kevin Connor missed out on a £100,000 jackpot after his winning streak on the horses finally ran out of steam.

Mr Connor, who runs the Rose Hill Tavern in Westhoughton had hoped to scoop the jackpot following a bet placed on four horses on Saturday.

But by 6pm it was clear it was not to be his day, but he was not duly concerned -- for he still picked up £1,000 under the terms of the bet.

And the bet itself had not cost him a penny.

Mr Connor had been handed a £1,500 stake to place on a £100 "Lucky 15" bet at Done Brothers bookmakers in Westhoughton. And after that stroke of luck, the landlord settled down at 2.45pm to watch his chosen horse, Volata, in the John Smith's Chipchase Stakes in Newcastle.

As dozens of cheering punters waved their arms frantically and screamed at the top of their voices, the 6-4 favourite romped home.

Attentions then turned to the 3pm race at Newmarket to watch Mubtaker (11-8 fav) as excitement began to mount when he too stole the race.

Punters were left breathless as they tuned in for the 3.50pm Northumberland Plate race in which Prairie Falcon was running. Yet in the last 300 yards, the horse fell away to come home fifth -- dashing Mr Connor's chances of the £100,000.

The final race was the 5.50pm Laurent Perrier Handicap Race in which the horse, Goretski (7-2 fav), came third.

Laughing

Mr Connor said: "I'm making light of it. I've still come away laughing with £1,000.

"It's not every day that you get the chance to have a multibet on such high stakes.

"I realise that it's caused quite a bit of interest in the town.

"We were all really excited after the second race won. But I sat in the corner of the pub while the punters watched. I couldn't really watch. When Prairie Falcon fell away in the final furlong, it caused a bit of commotion. Goretski gave a good account of itself too.

"But I have a lot to celebrate. I've won £1,000 and I think I'll spend it on a holiday later in the year."

The landlord began his betting spree after he has was handed a free £1 "Lucky 15" bet last Saturday following a successful midweek flutter.

He hit a winning streak and scooped first prize plus his winnings with three successes out of four selections -- his fourth was narrowly beaten. He was hoping for a repeat success on Saturday.

The Lucky 15 bet is made up of four singles, six doubles, four trebles and an accumulator.
