Coronation Park, Radcliffe
ON Saturday Bury Croquet Club's short lawn team began their season with a home match against League newcomers Kendal, whose team had limited track records in competition but with a tendency to quite respectable handicaps.
In the opening round, only Bury's captain Geoff Young managed a win. Barbara Young was not at her best and Richard Harvey was showing signs that the poor weather had done little for his preparedness. Jean Hargreaves played what was probably her best game of the day but with little impact on her opponent.
The second round was a bit more hopeful, with wins for both the Youngs, while Jean lost in a very low-scoring game and Richard did get into the act, though losing.
After lunch, the rotation of opponents put Geoff and Barbara up against the stronger pair of visitors, and the odd decent break did not suffice. Richard had two wins but the overall result was a win for Kendal by 11 games to six.
