BUS operators Stagecoach North West have been slammed for 'unfairly' hiking fares for the third time in just 18 months in the Clayton area.

Clayton-le-Woods councillor Bill Mellor said the increase added insult to injury as the previous rise affected residents in his ward more than others.

The Liberal Democrat, pictured here, said: "Stagecoach Ribble introduced a full increase early last year for all travellers, but then in October introduced an 'adjusted fares' increase.

"This meant a rise in some areas and a reduction or no change in others, and people living here were forced to pay more to travel."

The latest fare increase is eight per cent across the board. Coun Mellor said it spells disaster for his ward.

"There are a lot of unemployed people here -- how are they expected to afford these constant, unfair increases? "If Stagecoach charged less they would get far more people on the buses and still make a profit -- everyone would benefit", he added.

Chris Bowles, commercial director for Stagecoach North West, confirmed the recent increase was the third in 18 months, but said: "We have been forced to increase our fares because of a rise in inflation and a rise in costs such as fuel, materials and labour. Clayton has not been singled out. We are looking at extending cheaper tickets for regular travellers in the area later this year."

He went on to say that Stagecoach were not the only bus company affected and other operators have had to do the same.
