A FARMERS market, CCTV cameras and street trading are part of a plan to boost Bolton.

The plans have been sent to market traders and councillors for consultation and are intended to provide a "healthy fIn Bolton town centre, CCTV cameras could be installed in the market and street trading could be created on Corporation Street for Market Hall tenants.

Bolton Council has also announced plans for a farmers market in Farnworth and is investigating spreading the market into the nearby square, next to Asda.

Cllr Donald Grime, the council's member for direct services, said Bolton and Farnworth markets were performing well, in contrast to Westhoughton and Horwich.

He said: "I'm particularly pleased that the situation in Farnworth is now improving since the refurbishment in 1998.

"By working together with the traders we can ensure a healthy future for all the borough's markets.

"We already meet regularly with all parties involved and these proposals are some of the ideas that have come out of those discussions."

The report also recommends action to boost trade at Horwich and Westhoughton markets.

This could include merger, refurbishment, selling the land and constructing two new buildings alongside other shops, selling them to a private operator or offering them to a trading partner under licence.
