BOLTON is still at the centre of an investigation to catch a stalker who has targeted more than 70 famous female actresses with obscene letters.

The man, who has used envelopes with Bolton and Bury postmarks, has bombarded celebrities including ex-Avengers stars Joanna Lumley and Diana Rigg with explicit mail detailing his sexual fantasies for the last 20 years.

Forensic handwriting experts have linked thousands more letters to the same man, whose other victims include Dee Dee Wilde, founder of dance troupe Pans People and Radio Four presenter Sue MacGregor.

Police arrested an elderly man from the Wigan area in connection with the incident on April 10 after a high profile appeal for information on TV's Crimewatch.

The man -- who has not be named but is aged in his 70s -- was released without charge on May 3.

And today police chiefs said inquiries were continuing.
