FORMER Royle Family star Andrew Whyment is set to become a familiar face in Britain's top soap -- Coronation Street.

The 19-year-old Bolton actor will appear in nine episodes over the next three weeks, starting on Sunday.

Granada bosses say they are ready to give him regular work on the UK's best-known TV programme in a move that could make him a permanent fixture.

Andrew has already appeared four times in the soap, playing Kirk Sutherland, the brother of Tyrone's bride-to-be, Maria, acted by 18-year-old Samia Ghadie.

Most recently, he had a starring role in the couple's on-screen engagement party.

He said: "I enjoy playing Kirk and it's great to go back to Coronation Street. I've become friends with most of the cast now and it makes filming an absolute joy."

Andrew's character is similar to dodgy Darren, the lad he played in the cult BBC comedy, The Royle Family.

Now the Bradshaw actor has been offered a lengthier run and a Granada spokesman said: "It's standard on Coronation Street to offer a short-term contract and then negotiate a longer-term one later on.

"It's very likely he will become a more familiar face in the soap in the future."

Andrew has also appeared in Cracker, Heartbeat and Where the Heart Is.

His career took off, though, when he became close friends with The Royle Family's producers, Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash -- also known as Denise and Dave in the hit show. They spotted his talent and Andrew, who has always said he wants to remain in Bolton, appeared in the second and third series of the comedy.

He was set to become godfather to his best friend Anthony's expected baby. But that will not happen now, since writer Caroline Aherne has quit the show, ending prospects for a fourth series.

Andrew appeared unfazed and said a full-time part in Coronation Street would be a dream. He also revealed he was involved in talks to star in a one-off drama.

In his spare time he likes to play with his indie band, Notion. They recently performed at Bolton's Albert Halls for the BEN's Pop Fever concert.
