Wanderers appear to have won the race to sign Gillingham's highly-rated midfielder Nicky Southall.
The Middlesbrough-born 29-year-old, who is out of contract at the Priestfield Stadium, has been linked with a string of clubs - including Reading and Everton - since rejecting a new deal but the Gills say the player is on his way to Bolton on a Bosman free transfer.
"He goes with our best wishes," manager Andy Hessenthaler said today.
Southall, formerly with Hartlepool and Grimsby, made a big impression on Wanderers when he helped Gillingham come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 at the Reebok on March 10, scoring the second Gills' goal with a superbly-struck free kick.
Wanderers' boss, Sam Allardyce, has not confirmed an interest in the player but is known to have been on the trail of a number of new signings for next season - irrespective of the division Wanderers are in - and is understood to have already reached agreements with two players.
