She cut the first turf at the site of a new parental suite and family rooms at the Princess Anne Maternity Unit to be built at the Royal Bolton Hospital. The Duchess was invited to Bolton by the children's hospital appeals charity, CHAT.
She spoke with hospital chiefs before going on a brief tour of the ward, which cares for premature babies.
The Duchess then left for the Christie Hospital, Manchester.
The Manchester charity is hoping to raise public awareness of its appeal to equip the unit, ambulances and hospitals with life-saving equipment.
