A YOUNG super sleuth, who uncovered a stash of suspected stolen credit cards and a lethal blade, has been praised by police chiefs.

Lia Errington, 12, alerted her father to the find, minutes after discovering the cards, photographs and a six inch bladed kitchen knife as she played with her younger brother and sister.

The Harper Green pupil's father then wore a pair of rubber gloves to carefully collect the dumped belongings which were found on council ground off Edith Street, Farnworth.

On Monday, the last day of her Easter school holidays, Lia and her grandmother took the items to Farnworth police station to hand over to officers.

Lia, of Randolph Road, Kearsley, said: "I've never done anything like this before but I just hope that whoever these cards and photographs belong to, that they get them back. That would make me very happy."

The youngster happened across the cards - thought to have been stolen from a man named William Heywood - as she played on dismantled lamp posts on the waste ground.

As she jumped from one of the posts she spotted the sharp kitchen knife which had been hidden in a slot in the post.

The youngster also recovered a credit card, Norweb card, supermarket club card and three photographs.

Now officers from Farnworth police station are set to scour the waste ground to see if there are anymore belongings to be found.

Today Chief Inspector Alan Greene of Bolton Central police station praised Lia's quick-thinking.

He added: "She has shown real initiative for someone of such an age. It won't be long before we will be sending her an application form to join the force."
