PLANS to build a new mosque in Bolton have been described as a "striking" reflection of the expanding multi-cultural nature of the town.
Proposals for the two-storey rectangular brick and stone mosque were approved at the latest meeting of the council's planning committee.
Applicants the Islamic Culture Centre want to site the building on land at Peace Street close to the Derby Street end of their existing site.
The new mosque will be a three-domed structure -- two of glass and one of copper with a 27m high minaret.
The mosque will have places for 2,011 prayer mats over two floors with a library, study room, and office space. There will also be parking spaces for 50 cars which can be accessed from Cannon Street.
A report to the planning committee stated that they had received one objection from nearby residents who were concerned about an "over-provision of place of worship facilities" in the area.
But in recommending approval the report adds: "The application represents a significant and appropriate investment in Bolton's community infrastructure."
It adds: "Although not at this time so reminiscent of the town's traditional architectural style, it is nevertheless striking, distinctive and emblematic of the town's developing multi-cultural base."
