HORWICH SUNDAY LEAGUE ROUND UP BY KIERON HANDLEY

Smithills still outshine rest AS the season draws to a close the destination of the Division One Championship trophy has never been closer.

Newcomers Smithills currently lying top of the table with a magnificent 100 per cent record continued to outshine their nearest rivals with an outstanding away display at Crofters when they smashed in four goals.

Fox and Stork are hot on their heels and a victory from their last game and a defeat for Smithills would create a possible play off between the two sides who have been evenly matched over the short season.

Fox & Stork's recent run of four wins has propelled them into seconnd place and are matching Smithills with a likewise 4-0 comfortable victory away at Breightmet.

In the other games to have taken place during the past week Spinning Mule, Long Pull and Barnstormers all finished their campaigns with mixed fortunes - Barnstormers going down to only a single goal from the league leaders Smithills, Long Pull were on the end of a hammering from an in form Fox & Stork team 7-2 and then lost 4-1 to Spinning Mule.

Mule were unfortunate when they came up against their closest rivals Walkden in the derby losing 4-1 then they seemed to be getting back on track when they only lost to a single goal in a 4-3 thriller at Breightmet but they went out in fine style though when they thrashed Long Pull 4-1 at the weekend.

In the Premier Division Carters Arms sit proudly at the top in pole position with 16 points from their seven games played the latest of their recent run of victories came at home when they defeated championship contenders Fc Gap in a thrilling game 3-2.

A&A Pineapple are sitting in joint second place one point behind Carters but have a game in hand on them and it could prove decisive. Their magnificent 5-1 home rout proved to much to handle for White Horse.

Ladybridge have chalked up 15 points from their eight games and are also in joint second place mainly thanks to an easy 6-1 victory at the weekend against Wingates.
