BOLTON'S night-time economy could be heading for even more variety after plans to transform a disused building for leisure purposes was given the all-clear.

Now the town's historic Nelson Square could see a mixture of new pubs, restaurants and takeaways being created after the council's planning committee approved plans to change the use of four empty retail units on the ground floor of Provincial House.

A report to the committee stated: "This proposal seeks permission for the use of the four units for an unspecified use within Class A3 which could include a pub, hot food takeaway, restaurant or any combination of those uses within the four units."

Alternatively, applicants Dawney Day Property Management Ltd could use the four units to create one large venue.

Nelson Square is already one of the hubs of Bolton's nightlife containing popular venues such as Red on the Square, The Spinning Mule and Juice.

The committee heard that as part of larger plans for the area, neighbouring Infirmary Street will be pedestrianised in line with the council's Southern Gateway Initiative to breathe new life into the area.

The report added that because the proposed new venues are in a town centre area there would be no need for car parking provision because it was believed the majority of visitors would come using public transport.

It concludes: "The scheme is considered to represent an opportunity to secure a re-use of this vacant site which will generate activity, particularly at night, and is thus considered to contribute in a positive way to the character and appearance of both the Square and the wider Conservation Area."
