DRIVERS should be breathing a sigh of relief on Monday as more than six months of roadwork misery on St Peter's Way finally comes to an end.

work began back in October to strengthen bridges along a stretch of the road and was due to finish in mid-February.

A mixture of bad weather conditions and complications in the repair of two bridges meant it was extended into spring, adding to the frustrations of motorists who suffered heavy delays caused by lane reductions.

But unless torrential rain forecast for the next few days causes further hold-ups, council highways chiefs have revealed restrictions on the A666 St Peter's Way will be removed over the weekend.

Work being carried out on a bridge underneath St Peter's Way in Moses Gate will continue for a further four weeks, with the probability of continuing delays on sliproads below.

The estimated cost of repairs to the busy route is £1.25 million. The latest round of repairs came just five months after £1 million worth of strengthening work was carried on Bradford Street bridge.

Roadworks were suspended between December 9 and January 7 to stop congestion biting during the hectic Christmas and New Year shopping period.

A council spokesman praised motorists for putting up with the work, which he stressed was vital to tackle 30 years' worth of wear and tear.

He said: "We would like to thank the public for their patience while these major and necessary roadworks were carried out."

Emergency service drivers were able to use local knowledge to avoid delays during the roadwork period. DRIVERS should be breathing a sigh of relief on Monday as more than six months of roadwork misery on St Peter's Way finally comes to an end.
