A MISCHIEVOUS schoolboy got into a spot of bother during his lunchtime break -- and had to be rescued by the fire brigade.

Little Connor Greenhalgh, aged five, had to be cut free by firemen after he became lodged between a bench and a wall during school break in the playground.

Connor found himself stuck fast when he slipped behind a bench outside Haslam Park County Primary School, Wigan Road, Bolton.

Firefighters used two saws to cut through the bench to remove a section of timber before plucking the youngster free.

Connor escaped uninjured and after a hug for the fire brigade continued his lessons as normal.

He also cheered up when a fireman allowed him to wear one of their helmets and could not wait to tell his mum, Michelle what had happened.

She said: "Connor was a little scared at first but when he saw his friends and the teachers he calmed down. He sees the funny side of it now."

School staff called the fire brigade after they had been unable to free the struggling pupil.

A fire spokesman said: "The poor lad was a bit distressed. We don't know how he got in there but he was completely stuck. It was difficult to get him out."
