THE logistical exercise currently being undertaken in order to control the foot and mouth disease has never been attempted or was even necessary before and it is guesswork as to what manpower will be needed should the epidemic escalate.
The army of workers and military personnel currently working round the clock are to be congratulated for their valiant effort to control this terrible disease. Political point scoring is what can be expected from a demoralised party whose ratings have dropped even more during these past six weeks. I say to the Tories -- "stop throwing the muck at the fan, most of it will come back and hit you, like the proverbial egg."
No wonder Messrs Hogg, Gummer, Waldegrave, McGreggor and others are keeping quiet on this issue. I suspect they agree with me in preferring dead animals arising from Government policy rather than dead human beings. At the very worst, foot and mouth disease will last for only a few more months, but, unfortunately, deaths from the effects of BSE (CJD) may still be reported in 10 to 15 years, maybe 20 years, who knows?
