THE news that more than 10,000 residents have signed up for postal votes is good news for the forthcoming General Election.
The need to attract more people to vote will have been a major consideration in the recent changes in electoral law -- and postal votes will certainly help.
The more challenging aspect of encouraging more Bury folk to actually use their right to vote is surely in the hands of the politicians themselves. For until ordinary people feel that local parties are relevant to their aspirations, actual turnouts in local and General Elections will continue to be lower than our European counterparts.
