A HORWICH soldier has amazed his officers after he shot up the ranks.
Cpl Glen Hughes, of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, went from a private to a corporal in just nine months - a feat which takes most soldiers at least two years
The 22-year-old, who joined the regiment when he was 19, was a private until he came top of a six-week training course last March.
Promoted to Lance-Corporal, he then completed a further training course in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales to be made a corporal.
Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Glover, at the regiment's HQ in Fulwood Barracks, Preston, said: "To go from private to corporal in just nine months shows he is a smart cookie who is going places.
"He has done exceptionally well and is obviously a good Lancashire lad."
His mum, Tracey Wilkes, said: "He has done absolutely brilliant. We are all very proud of him.
"It just goes to show you can do anything if you put your mind to it."
Cpl Hughes is now on a tour of duty in Northern Ireland.
