TWO intrepid teachers have quit their jobs, sold their home, and traded in their car -- to travel around the world together on a tandem bike.

Geography teacher David Purnell and partner Helene Germain, a language teacher, will "saddle-up" for the 32,000 mile trek.

Their trip, which they will start in June, is expected to last around 18 months across terrain in Athens, Tehran, Auckland and Hawaii.

But the gruelling schedule or lifestyle change does not worry the adventurous duo from Horwich.

They plan to walk straight back into work once their lifelong ambition to tour the world is over.

Mr Purnell, aged 34, of Mary Street West, who teaches at Burnege High School, said: "It is quite scary thing to do but we will probably be able to get a job when we get back.

"We rode around British Columbia for six weeks last year and loved it so much that we decided to start saving up and travel the world.

"It is a very brave decision to make but at the end of the day you only live once!"

The couple are now appealing for Bolton businesses to help fund and sponsor their trip -- which they estimate could cost around £13,000. Helene, aged 29, who teaches at Longridge High School in Preston, said: "I'm really looking forward to it -- I can't wait.

"I'm pretty fed up with teaching and hope I can find something better to do during the next 18 months.

"It promises to be a fantastic experience."

The duo plan to ride around 50 miles a day on their custom-made tandem mountain bike - which cost £3,000.

They are also hoping to create a website where any sponsors can advertise their products.
