WITH Bonfire Night fast approaching, many Bolton people will be planning a fun-packed fireworks party.

But don't forget your pets. It's a warning put out every year yet still some folk forget to make sure their pets are safe.

Experts are urging everyone to keep their pets inside and safe, not only on November 5, but in the lead-up when fireworks are already available in the shops.

Pets left outside can be shocked by the sound of fireworks causing them to run away in panic.

Pet expert Gairn Ross says: "The sheer noise of fireworks can shock a pet into running away and becoming lost and frightened in unfamiliar surroundings.

"The main danger time is, of course, the evening which means dogs should be exercised during the day and then kept in a room with the curtains drawn and with a familiar background sound -- a TV or radio.

"Cats should be kept indoors with a litter tray and caged animals, such as rabbits, guinea pigs or birds must be protected too. Smoke, sparks and noise could cause damage and distress. Transfer all cages and hutches indoors during the firework celebrations."
