BRIDE-to-be Maggie Simmons has cancelled her wedding as her fiance fights for his life.

Maggie, aged 48, travels to be at the bedside of John Maloney every day.

He is still unconscious following a horror smash in Breightmet five days ago.

He is in intensive care at Rochdale's Birch Hill Hospital.

Maggie was due to marry John on September 16 after a whirlwind romance.

She said: "We have only been seing each other for three months. I have cancelled the registry office.

"I'm upset but it's more important to get John through this."

Security guard John suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his car and smashed into a house on Milnthorpe Road.

A taxi driver gave him the kiss of life before emergency services arrived.

Today, Maggie, who lives with John at Crossdale Road, Breightmet, said she would like to thank the taxi driver for keeping John alive.

Maggie, who suffered cracked ribs and severe bruising in the crash and had to be cut free by firefighters from the passenger seat, said: "Without him, I don't think John would be alive today.

"I would like to thank him and everyone involved in helping us."

It was John's fifth heart attack and came on unexpectedly as he left home to visit his mum in Daubhill.

Maggie said: "He just collapsed. His leg locked on the accelerator and I tried to move it.

"But we hit the brick wall at 70 mph. I really thought my life was over.

"People came rushing out and the taxi driver noticed John wasn't breathing and dragged him out of the car."

But Maggie remains positive that John will pull through it.

She said: "He's a fighter."
