WE NEED a youth club, and we have got a petition to prove it!

That's the message from Heskin teenagers who are so fed up with having no facilities they have given a petition calling for a youth club to the a borough councillor.

Friends Carly Jones, Sally Hays, Sam Green, all aged 13, and Cheryl Andrews, aged 14, started the campaign at the start of the summer holidays.

Sally said: "One day we were sitting about, because there is nothing at all to do in Heskin.

"We just thought we would go around with a petition. It was Carly's idea." Carly said: "All the other villages round us have a youth club and we just felt a bit left out.

"We thought if we could get loads of signatures on the petition people would listen to us."

Sally added: "We just want somewhere to go. We need a place to meet friends and listen to music. We would like a club once a week."

The teenagers presented their petition -- with dozens of signatures on it -- to borough councillor Edward Forshaw at the start of the summer holidays.

Councillor Forshaw said: "In my ten years here I haven't known of anything like this. It is something new.

"I think that sometimes it does need this kind of initiative to come forward, before things start moving.

"We do have a village hall in Heskin, and people have, on occasion, organised discos on a casual basis," he added. But he warned that a proper club would take time to get off the ground.

"I will be discussing it with the people who deal with youth services at Lancashire county council," he said.

Councillor Forshaw said he would also be looking into the possibility of providing a minibus service to take Heskin children to youth clubs in other areas.
