zOGETHER with colleagues Cllrs Maureen and Tony Connell, may we express our deep appreciation and grateful thanks to the many young people who have put a great deal of voluntary effort to tidy and improve the appearance of the central shopping area of Little Lever.

They were just one of many groups, with members from all over the country, and even from abroad, which have undertaken similar environmental projects throughout Greater Manchester.

Members of the King's Centre and Christ Church in Little Lever, supported by the Council's Leisure and Environmental services, co-operated to organise the activities.

Litter has been removed, overgrown vegetation cut down, and paintwork renovated. With the help of an artist, colour and attractive village scenes and images, have been added to shop frontages.

Plants supplied by a local garden centre have made possible the creation of what will be a colourful flower display.

Everyone involved was most encouraged by the appreciative comments of passing shoppers and the desire of local young people to join in the work.

This is, we hope, just the first stage of a continuing sequence of initiatives, which, with Council support, will invite the local community, and particularly young people, to become involved in similar schemes.

With this co-operation there is so much that can be achieved to improve the local environment.

Particularly, when we see what has been achieved in this short period, there is a renewed faith in the positive contribution of young people whose behaviour is so often the target of criticism.
