A READER asked recently if anyone had any details of the Bridge Inn, which was demolished along with the old Fish Market for the widening of Bridge Street in the early 1930s.

Mrs Betty Wood, of Devonshire Road, Bolton, rang to say that her great-grandparents, James Ormrod Balshaw, and his wife Sarah, were certainly the licensees of the Inn in 1861 (he was previously at the Clarence Hotel, Bradshawgate), and that he died there not long afterwards and was buried in St George's Churchyard. However, she does not know any more details of the Inn itself. Thanks for going to funeral A FEW weeks ago I printed a picture of the workers in the limeyard at Walker's Tannery, taken to celebrate the Coronation in 1953. I have now had a message from M.M. Cowper (nee Caffrey), who lives in Paphos, Cyprus, who tells me that her father was on the photograph. 'He died a few years ago aged 91, and a gentleman from the limeyard came to the funeral. I would thank him through your column. I was not able to contact him, as he left no name; I do know that he lived in the vicinity of Tonge Cemetery.' Do you know?
