Churchgate, looking east towards the parish church and through a battlemented arch decked with flags and bunting for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, 1877. To the right is the Star Inn which replaced the notorious Theatre of Varieties, one of the town's moral blackspots in the early years of the Queen's reign. Next was the Theatre Royal, who's scenery builders and proprietor Mr Ellison were responsible for the wooden arch. A grand turn-out of cabs and cabbies is ready for a special Jubilee event. The banner to the left is that of the Sons of Isaac Walton and that to the right belongs to the Hearts of Oak Lodge.
