Lostock RUFC's committee made a brave and bold decision recently, when they appointed last season's caretaker coach Dave Mallen to the full-time position.

David, who holds coaching awards in rugby league, gained most of his expertise while living in the North East, where he played for Tynemouth RLC.

His coaching experience was gained when he was coach at Newcastle University for two seasons.

A career move within the teaching profession brought David to the North West.

Dave, who was delighted with his appointment, was very upbeat about the coming season.

"I was very encouraged by several good results at the end of last season when I was in charge," said David.

"My priority for this season is to improve on-ball retention and handling skills, combined with greater fitness."

Although playing his cards close to his chest, Dave added: "We will surprise and upset a few teams after we have added a new dimension to our game during pre-season training."

Lostock chairman Barry Jug said: "Yes, this is a brave move. "However, we believe it is a positive one and we have great faith in Dave.

"Numbers at training are already up to 30-plus and we just hope all the players match Dave's commitment.

"Everyone involved with the club is looking for a good season this year."
