BUS users were today fighting an application for an average 29 per cent fare rise by Greater Manchester Transport. If it goes through, this will be the third large rise in 12 months.
MPs voted last night for their controversial pay rise, and decided to link their salaries to the assistant secretary of state grade, giving themselves an increase of £1,250 despite a pay policy maximum of £6 a week for everyone else.

ALL available members of the Wanderers' professional staff were due to report at Burnden Park again today, when their close season break officially ended, writes 'The Tramp'. They were all in with the exception of Willie Moir, who had an extension of leave to attend his brother's wedding, and Jimmy Hernon, who is having trouble with an abscess in the ear. Mr Peter Duxbury, the club chairman, gave them a welcome in a bright dressing room speech, and extended the best wishes of his co-directors and the administrative staff for a happy season. Only light training was indulged in, but there was a session of road work, about eight miles on a course selected over Great Lever and Breightmet.
