A MUM rescued her sleeping five-year-old son from his bedroom last night after a candle set a bed on fire.

Karen Jones raced upstairs to grab Lee after her eldest son, Peter, aged 14, left a candle on the window sill of his bedroom.

The candle was blown onto his bed at Green Fold Lane, Westhoughton, by the wind.

Firefighters praised Mrs Jones for her actions and said the outcome could have been a lot worse.

Sub-officer Pete Johnson said: "The boy found the fire and shut the door, preventing flames and smoke from spreading.

"He alerted his mum, who was brave because she didn't know what she would face when she went back up the stairs."

Firefighters were on the scene in minutes and used a jet reel to bring the blaze under control.
