OXFAM campaigners took to the streets of Chorley in the fight for universal education for all.

Oxfam's Education Now campaign aims to raise awarness of the 125 million children worldwide who do not receive an education.

And in an effort to make the people of Chorley more aware of the situation, campaigners set up an outreach stall communicating the charity's message.

Chorley MP, Lindsay Hoyle, made his way down to the stall to lend his support.

He said: " I fully support Oxfam's Education Now campaign. I think Chorley has benefited from the Oxfam group bringing awareness of the campaign to the streets of Chorley.

"I believe that education is the key to improving development and I commend Oxfam for raising awareness of the numbers of children in the world who do not receive an education." And Chorley people helped the cause by signing Oxfam action postcards that will be sent to the Prime Minister asking him to make education for all children his number one international priority.

Local campaigner, Katy McDermott, said: "Oxfam wants Tony Blair to push leaders of rich nations to recognise the link between debt relief and education for all, and press them to drop the debts owed to them by developing countries.

"Tony Blair has supported Oxfam's Education Now campaign by pledging to put education on the agenda of the G7 summit in July.

"Oxfam wants the Prime Minister to back up his commitment with action - to ensure that all children have the chance of an education to work their way out of poverty."

In 1990, world leaders promised basic education for all primary school children by the Millennium, but in 1995 it was clear that this deadline was not going to be met.

A new deadline for the year 2015 was set but to meet this means that action is needed now.

Chorley people who want to support Oxfam can do so in a number of ways including letter writing, fundraising and running campaign stalls.

If you would like to join the group, you are invited to join the next meeting in late June (date to be announced). Please contact Keith Hargreaves on 01257 269861.
