PENSIONERS are not asking for handouts or charity but for the level of pension for which we worked and paid. Until we get that, the extra benefits such as heating allowances and free TV licences, among others, are essential. When we get the equivalent of £150, they will no longer be needed. Pensioners pay VAT, most pay income tax and council tax. They pay the same tax on food, alcohol and cigarettes as everyone. The anniversary of Dunkirk is a good time to remember what pensioners have done for the country and how their labour has been the basis for the country's prosperity.
It's time for politicians to stop using us as political pawns and be responsible and pay us what we are owed. The money is there and we have a right to share in the country's prosperity.
