THE family of a well-known doctor from Chorley who sadly passed away this month wish to thank the many kind people who sent flowers and best wishes to their home.

Dr Edward James Purcell, 72, who had a practice on Collison Avenue, Chorley, died on Tuesday May 2 after battling against cancer.

He leaves behind his wife, Peggy, son, Patrick, daughter, Margaret Mary and two grandchildren, Hannah, two, and Aidan, three months.

Edward was born in Dublin in 1927 before moving to Rossendale where his father was a GP.

His funeral was held on Saturday, May 6, at Euxton's St Mary's RC Church attended by many of his close friends and colleagues. Peggy said: "The family would like to thank the many people who sent flowers, letters and cards on the death of Eddie.

"We would also like to thank Fathers Cadagan, Crowther and Chaloner for celebrating the funeral mass, and to all who attended. It gave us great comfort."

She added: "Also, we would like to express our thanks to Margaret and Anthony Dickinson and the choir of St Mary's in Euxton for lifting our spirits by their singing.

"To doctors Almond and Ross, thank you for your kindness and visits, as well as the 'on call' doctors for their help.

"We are most grateful to our wonderful neighbours whose help, love and kindness carried us through this sad time.

"I would also like to say a sincere thanks to Bernard and Carl Kenyon and their staff for their help, efficiency and very dignified funeral arrangements, and to the caterers and staff at St Mary's Parish Centre in Chorley."
