ONE of the biggest sporting events in Radcliffe's history is to take place this summer.

The Radcliffe Festival of Sport 2000 will see teams of all ages competing in sports ranging from football to fishing and archery to rounders.

The extravaganza has been organised by Radcliffe Sports Council and its president, Mr Ronald Morris, said it will be an unforgettable event.

"We wanted to do something to mark the Millennium and strengthen the community of Radcliffe.

"It's going to make a lot of people very happy and it may become an annual festival."

From June 3 onwards, teams will begin competing against each other in everything from swimming to snooker. The festival climaxes on August 28 -- a Bank Holiday -- when finalists will do battle before the presentation of trophies. It is hoped Radcliffe's snooker world champion, John Spencer, will be the guest of honour.

On that day too, the Rotary Club of Radcliffe will stage "It's a Knockabout" at Radcliffe Cricket Club.

Teams of four are invited to take part in a fun-packed test of slapstick which will combine brains and brawn.

Mr Morris said: "We need as many people as possible to take part if it is to be a success."

If you or your team wants to get involved you can call Mr Morris on 723 3627. Those wishing to participate in It's a Knockabout should ring David Beesley on 761 7609.
